"So, what do you think dancing is?" the speaker, a very energetic young lady, walked around the auditorium with her vivid voice. She threw questions one after another, hoping us to interact with her. "Dancing is a art of movement." "A performance come along with music." "Exploring one's own body!" Her question generated active responses. And that was how Ms. Ting showed us the world of dance. In the lecture today, we not only learned a brief process about dance development in history, but also tried to accommodate our body to the temple on stage.
In the first section of the lecture, Ms. Ting gave us a concept of development in different dancing types. We started with the well known classic one- ballet. Ballet is originally an Italian folk dance, spread into France in 17th century because of the political marriage between two countries. Louis xiv of France liked it a lot, therefore started the first dancing school in the world. Louis xiv liked ballet so much that he was in his skinnies(the dancing suit) in his portrait. In ballet dance, the position of every gesture needs to be very precise and exact. Plus, ballet is featured in four characteristics: open, upright, tight and straight.(開立繃直)
With the progress of ballet in different era, types of ballet can be divided into three categories: Romantic Ballet, Classic Ballet and Modern Ballet. The three types of ballet can be easily recognized by the costume. While modern dancer dress carefree and loosely, romantic ballet dancers and classic ones have more formal dress. The way dancers dress can be a representation of their response to the plot and script. Romantic ballet, which literally has more romantic stories, has two main elements in the plot- the reality and the fantasy. Hence, the romantic ballet costume is long dress showing the lightness of fair ladies. Classic ballet, in other hand, focuses on the vivid and dramatic stories coming along with tutu- the short and bitty skirt.
In the second part, Ms. Ting invited us to perform with her on the stage. Lots of students participated the exercise following to the introduction she gave. In the end, Ms. Ting gave us a quick view over Chinese dance and Modern dance, and showed us some clips of performance.
The lecture was a vivid experience for people who don't dance and interesting guideline getting into the world of dancing. Having a little experience of dancing in my childhood, I was inspired to go to more performance because of the lecture. And in fact, I just went back to take modern dance lesson lately!
